a few impressions
I knew already before that Turkey is a fairly "modern" country. Regarding buildings, traffic, industry and farming there is nothing special, a bit more people working manually. Islam is dominating and mosques are everywhere. A lot of Turks are of a Muslim sect, Alevi, that don't visit mosques. Also a lot of Turks are fairly secular. Most young women here dresses like women to in other European countries, many old women have more traditional clothing. In the fancy bars and cafées you see a lot of women, in the olds style tea houses there are 100 percent males. You see a lot of women in all kinds of jobs, but it is only in modern style fast food places there are waitresses.
Supermarkets seem to spread like in all other places, but you still have a lot of small shops, where time seem to stand still.
When surfing on the internet, sometimes there is block from the Government. NO, I was not surfing porn sites, I was actually looking for som islamic views on economy. In this country it is also criminal to say anything bad about the great "father of the nation" Kemal Atatürk, a bit like in Thailand. He stands staue everywhere.
Maps are very hard to get. No petrol station has maps, and I looked in five bookshops - nowhere. I did get a map from Victor and Günesin, but it is not topographic and when you go by bike you like to know if there are mountains or not. I believe it is the military that is limiting the maps. I heard one anectdote where somebody making maps was told that there were to many Greek Islands off the coast of Turkey, so they should erase some of them!!!!
